In 1853, a Bohemian glass artist named Leopold Blaschka buried his wife and, grief-stricken, booked passage to America. Two weeks into the Atlantic crossing the ship went dead calm and sat motionless. With nothing else to do, Leopold leaned over the rail and studied the bioluminescent jellyfish drifting past. He sketched them in the dark.
He had no way of knowing this idle moment would become the most technically brilliant biological illustration project ever undertaken.
Back in Dresden, Leopold and his son Rudolf ran a family lampworking business — glass eyes, costume ornaments, lab equipment. But a chance commission from the director of the Dresden natural history museum changed everything. Professor Reichenbach had a problem: the only way to display a jellyfish or a sea anemone in the 1860s was to pickle it in alcohol. Within weeks the specimens became colorless floating blobs. He needed something permanent.
Leopold produced twelve glass sea anemones. They were perfect — every tentacle, every color shift, every translucent layer. Word spread. Soon museums in London, Berlin, Tokyo, Calcutta, and New Zealand were placing orders through a mail-order catalog.

Between 1863 and 1880, the Blaschkas produced at least 10,000 models representing some 700 species. They worked from live specimens kept in a custom-built aquarium in their home — one of the first private reef tanks in Europe. The models were so accurate that when Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology bought a set in 1888, it triggered a second commission that would eventually consume the rest of their careers: the Glass Flowers.
Harvard's botanical museum needed lifelike plant models for teaching. The Blaschkas signed a contract to work on them full-time, and the sea creature business ended. Leopold died in 1895. Rudolf kept making glass flowers for another forty years, then died in 1939. Their lampworking techniques — the formulas for the colored glass, the methods for creating translucent tissues and internal structures — went with them. Nobody has ever fully reproduced them.
The glass sea creatures scattered into dusty closets and museum storage. Many institutions forgot what they had. Harvard believed it owned 60 to 70 models; a recent inventory found 430. Some were found still packed in their original 1888 shipping crates.
The largest collections today live at the Corning Museum of Glass, Harvard's Museum of Natural History, Cornell University (570 models), and Ireland's Natural History Museum in Dublin (530 pieces). The Corning exhibit is called Fragile Legacy — the title works on two levels.
There is no surviving instruction manual. No apprentice notebooks. No written record of the technique beyond the objects themselves. A glass octopus from 1875, bought through the mail for two and a half dollars, is still the best image we have of a species that may no longer exist.
