Discovery

The first account of the rhinogrades reached Europe in 1941, when Swedish explorer Einar Pettersson-Skämtkvist landed on the island of Hiddudify after escaping from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. His descriptions of a shrew-like mammal that walked on its nose were initially dismissed as the ravings of a man who had spent too long adrift at sea.

The archipelago of Hy-yi-yi — eighteen islands scattered across a remote stretch of the Pacific — was found to host an evolutionary radiation unlike any other. The only native terrestrial mammals, aside from humans and a single species of shrew, were the rhinogrades: an entire order of placental mammals descended from a single ancestral shrew-like form, which had diversified to fill every available niche.

Their defining feature was the nasorium: a nose-like organ that had evolved into an astonishing variety of forms — leaping apparatus, fishing hooks, musical instruments, weapons, propellers, and olfactory organs of impossible sensitivity. In the isolation of the Hy-yi-yi islands, the nose had become everything.

The nasorium is a coiled spring-like organ, capable of propelling the animal up to 3 metres in a single bound. The fur is a brilliant gold — the only rhinograde known to produce a structural colour in its pelage.

Flies backwards by flapping its enormous ears. The nasorium serves as a rudder, steering by subtle lateral flexion. Nocturnal, feeds on flying insects caught in the gape of its open mouth.

The apex predator of the rhinogrades. The nasorium is a muscular, prehensile weapon tipped with a keratinous spike. Individuals are solitary and territorial, reaching 60 cm at the shoulder.

A large, bear-like herbivore with a nasorium modified into a muscular trunk tipped with a sensitive "finger". The shaggy coat, reaching 30 cm in length, provided insulation in the highlands of Hiddudify.

The nasorium terminates in a flower-like structure that attracts pollinating insects, which are then trapped and digested. A carnivorous rhinograde that mimics a lily. The motionless waiting period can last up to three days.

The nasorium is a long, hollow tube used to extract invertebrates from deep crevices and tree hollows. Capable of creating a vacuum seal, it can draw prey from cavities up to 30 cm deep.

The Hy-yi-yi Archipelago

The eighteen islands of Hy-yi-yi, each with its own endemic rhinograde fauna, formed a crescent-shaped chain spanning approximately 200 km of ocean. The main island, Hiddudify, was the largest and most biologically diverse.

† Extinction

In the late 1950s, nearby nuclear weapons testing by the United States military accidentally caused all of the islands of Hy-yi-yi to sink into the ocean, destroying all traces of the rhinogrades and their unique ecosystem. Also killed were all the world's Rhinogradentia researchers, who were attending a conference on Hiddudify at the time.

The only surviving record is the manuscript of Harald Stümpke's Bau und Leben der Rhinogradentia, which had been sent to the book's illustrator, Gerolf Steiner, in advance of publication. The book was published posthumously in 1961.

Rhinogradentia is considered one of the best-known biological hoaxes of the 20th century. The 1961 monograph was written in such perfect scholarly voice that several subsequent publications cited it as a genuine taxon. The paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson reviewed the book for Science in 1963, taking the opportunity to extend the joke — he criticized Stümpke's taxonomic nomenclature as "criminal violations of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature."

The book remains in print in multiple languages. The German ornithologist Wulf Ankle maintained that the rhinogrades were real. Rolf Siewing's Zoology Primer lists them as a genuine order of mammal, noting that their existence is doubted. The hoax was so thorough that it sometimes appears in April Fools' issues of scientific journals, always presented with the same straight face.

The original inspiration came from Christian Morgenstern's nonsense poem Das Nasobēm (1905): an animal that "strides on its noses." Gerolf Steiner, a real zoologist at the University of Heidelberg, drew a creature matching the poem as a thank-you to a student in 1945, and the joke grew into a complete fictional taxonomy. Steiner died in 2009, having maintained the fiction for over 60 years.
