The sea is not wine-coloured. You have seen it — grey, green, slate, teal, sometimes a deep indigo under cloud. You have never seen it the colour of a red wine. Yet Homer calls it that, seventeen times across the Iliad and the Odyssey: oînops póntos, the wine-faced sea. And he describes the sky as bronze. And sheep as violet.
This is not poetry. Or rather — it is not just poetry. It is a clue that the ancient Greek mind sorted colour differently than ours, and the same is true of every early written language on earth.
The first person to notice this systematically was not a linguist. It was William Gladstone — the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who in 1858 published Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age, a doorstop of a book mostly about Homer's politics, religion, and society. Tucked inside was an observation that launched a century of argument: Homer's colour vocabulary is bizarre.
He uses kyanós four times, but for the eyebrows of Zeus (dark), for Hector's hair (dark), for a mourning veil (dark). He uses chlōrós for honey (yellow-green) and for fear (pale). He calls sheep íodephes — violet-coloured. Blood is black. The sky is bronze. And across 27,000 lines of epic poetry, the word that would become the classical Greek word for blue — kyaneos in its later sense — never means blue.
Gladstone's conclusion (which he later had to defend against accusations that he'd called Homer colourblind) was straightforward: Homer didn't categorize colour by hue. He categorized it by lightness. A thing was bright or dark, pale or deep. The wine-dark sea is dark and stormy, not red. A violet sheep is deeply coloured, not purple. The bronze sky is bright and metallic, not brown.
In the 1860s, the German philologist Lazarus Geiger took Gladstone's observation and ran with it. He examined the Vedas, the Hebrew Bible, the Koran, early Icelandic sagas, and ancient Chinese texts. The result was the same everywhere: blue is absent. Not as a thing in the world — the sky is obviously blue — but as a word. A basic colour term. A name.
Geiger proposed that colour terminology develops in a fixed sequence across all human languages: dark and light first, then red, then yellow and green, and finally — always last — blue.
Nobody believed him. For a hundred years.
In 1969, Brent Berlin and Paul Kay, two anthropologists at UC Berkeley, published Basic Color Terms: Their Universality and Evolution. They studied 110 languages and ran controlled experiments with speakers of 20 of them, asking subjects to name colours from Munsell chips — a standard palette of 329 evenly spaced colours.
The result was a bombshell. Geiger was right.
English is at Stage VII, with 11 basic colour terms. The language of the Dani people of Papua is at Stage I: two colour terms, roughly "light" and "dark". The implication is not that Dani speakers see fewer colours — they distinguish hues perfectly well in experimental tasks — but that their language groups colours by brightness, not hue, the same way Homer did.
Think about what this means. Homer's "wine-dark sea" is not a poet inventing a striking metaphor. It is the normal expression of a speaker whose language hasn't yet developed a separate category for blue. The sea is dark. The most natural word for "dark" in Homeric Greek, when applied to liquids and surfaces, is "wine-faced."
Later refinements have complicated the picture — the Berlin-Kay hierarchy has been criticised for its universalist assumptions, and individual languages often have richer colour systems than the model suggests (Russian distinguishes siniy and goluboy, dark and light blue, as separate basic terms). But the core finding has held up across six decades of research: blue is the last spectral colour to be named in every language on every continent.
Not because people couldn't see it. Not because it doesn't appear in nature. But because a colour term isn't a label for a wavelength — it's a slice of perceptual space that a culture decides to carve out. And for most of human history, in every civilisation that left a written record, nobody carved out blue.
Until they did. And then everyone did.
